In anticipation of welcoming our little nugget into the world, I have started gathering ideas for how to create a unique nursery… and even though we probably won’t embark on creating a true nursery for a few months, I have been enamored with some of what I’m seeing.

Traditional nurseries typically centered around two things - either a gender specific color palette (blue or pink) or gender neutral (pastel green, yellow, and most recently shades of grey and beige-based neutrals). But in recent years, there has been a drastic shift - far more inventive designs are coming to life, and I am ALL for it.
Based on my research thus far, here are a few of my observations for how to create a one-of-a-kind nursery that is a far cry from the traditional pinks & blues… (although secretly I still love both!)
1) Decorative Walls (or Ceilings!)
Use of wallpaper has been on the rise for the last few years, and in particular it’s popping up a lot in baby nurseries. The variety is endless, with millions of options to choose from, this is a surefire way to create a unique look and feel - even if wallpaper is only purposed on one “accent” wall, the detailing & effect on the overall design is huge.
Shiplap or custom wood moldings create striking features - an easy way to add a farmhouse, rustic or industrial feel.
Tufted fabric has the most cozy allure, softening the space while increasing sound insulation.
Bamboo wall - so visually interesting, but I have no idea how to direct you to start tackling this one…!!
Wall decals - like feathers, leaves, flowers, animals, you name it. Also endless options in this category, many of which seem to be removable!
2) Soft, Cozy Layered Textiles
Although (from what I’ve read) it’s recommended to keep baby’s crib pretty light on plush things, that doesn’t mean you can’t still achieve a super cozy feel. Adding layered rugs - shearling and soft woven wool are both so yummy.
3) Trading out the Rocker

Rocking chairs have come a looooong way since the good ole days… Most commonly these days you’ll see reclining/swivel chairs accompanied by ottomans that rock too… And while these are amazing options for creating that soothing connection with your little babe, another beautiful design feature in a nursery space is a daybed. Layered with lots of soft, plush down pillows to help prop you up as needed, it offers an inviting secondary snoozin’ spot if space permits.
4) Lighting
Creative light fixtures are so in style right now - but I also think they’re here to stay. Gone are the days of only having recessed or flush-mount lights supplemented with table/stand up lamps… Nowadays, many designs incorporate fun, funky, cool light fixtures with tons of personality. Whether you’re going for a more bohemian look with a basketweave, or industrial style with exposed Edison bulbs, so long as the light is dimmable, I don’t think you can go wrong…
5) Storage
It’s no secret that storage is essential for the countless baby supplies you have on hand when expecting a newborn. These days, people aren’t required to have the “traditional” changing table with lots of drawers and cabinets - instead, they are able to make use of different styles of furniture with the addition of a removable changing pad layered on top. Meaning, storage can sometimes feel limited as a result. Simple open shelving or bookshelves with baskets makes for an easy and practical fix while still enhancing the overall aesthetic.
6) Color Choices
As mentioned above, modern nurseries are experimental with color. So long sweet pastels - many are opting for more bold wall color choices, such as forest green, navy blue, mauve, charcoal grey, plum, etc.
7) Art
Art not only adds dimension to the walls, but it injects tons of personality. Traditionally we’ve seen lots of bunnies, dinosaurs and teddy bears, but these days I’m noticing more unique themes. Like Safari animals and antique cars, old vintage maps and black & white family photos. Gallery walls offer beautiful visual interest, but even one-off standalone art features create depth too.
